Extraction Method of Gypenosides

Aug 23, 2022

Gypenosides is the main active ingredient of Gynostemma pentaphyllum, which has the functions of lowering blood lipids, anti-mutagenesis, anti-aging, enhancing immunity and protecting liver. The extraction method and conditions have a great influence on the extraction rate of Gypenosides. Here are a few different extraction methods for you.

Gypenosides

1. Solvent extraction

Gypenosides are extracted by solvent method, usually with water, methanol and ethanol as extraction medium. Extraction methods such as dipping, percolation, decoction, and reflux are used.

The extraction effects of methanol, 50% ethanol, 75% ethanol, 95% ethanol and water on the effective components of Gynostemma pentaphyllum were compared, and the content of total Gynostemma saponins in the extract was determined by spectrophotometry. The results showed that the content of total saponins extracted by 95% ethanol was the highest, followed by 75% ethanol, 50% ethanol and methanol, and the content of total saponins extracted by water was the lowest.

2. Ultrasound-assisted extraction

Ultrasonic-assisted extraction refers to adding ultrasonic waves at the same time as water extraction. This method can not only shorten the extraction time of Gynostemma saponin, improve the extraction rate, but also avoid the influence of high temperature on the active ingredients. The extraction rate of ultrasonic assisted extraction is much higher than that of water extraction.

3. Microwave-assisted extraction

Microwave-assisted extraction refers to the addition of microwaves at the same time as water extraction. Compared with conventional extraction methods, microwave-assisted extraction has the characteristics of short extraction time, low solvent consumption, high extraction rate and high product purity.

4. Microwave-assisted enzyme extraction

Microwave-assisted enzyme-added extraction uses complex enzymes such as pectinase, hemicellulase, and cellulase to break the wall. At the same time, microwave extraction technology with simple operation, low energy consumption and high efficiency is introduced. This enables the Gynostemma powder to absorb electromagnetic energy in the rapidly vibrating microwave electromagnetic field, and uses the instantaneous internal and external pressure difference to rupture the cells, increasing the dissolution rate of Gynostemma saponins.

The microwave-assisted enzymatic extraction of Gypenosides increased the product yield, and the extraction temperature was low, and the process was highly operable.

5. Enzyme-assisted extraction

Enzymatic extraction has many advantages such as rapidity, high efficiency, mild reaction time, and easy control. In the extraction process, in order to maximize the activity of the enzyme, the amount and time of enzyme addition must be strictly controlled, so there are higher requirements for the amount and time to be added. Commonly used extraction enzymes include protease, cellulase, and pectinase, all of which have good enzymatic hydrolysis effects.

Summary

Gynostemma pentaphyllum has the characteristics of rich nutrition and homology of medicine and food, which has attracted much attention at home and abroad. Therefore, it is of great significance to carry out the research on the extraction process of Gypenosides for the further development and utilization of Gynostemma resources.
