Ruscus aculeata L. is a shrub of the family Liliaceae. The rhizome is traversing and thick. Stems much branched, dark green, 20-80 cm high. Leaf-shaped branches ovate, apex acuminate into 1-2 mm long acupuncture, base attenuate into short stalk, entire. Flowers white, 1-2 from the lower part of the midrib of the leafy branches; sepals ca. 2 mm long; perianth ca. 1.5-3 mm. Berries red. Flowering period from January to April, fruiting period from September to November.

It was originally produced in southern Europe. Occasionally cultivated in various parts of China. It is like warm and humid and sunny environment, slightly shade-tolerant, cold-resistant, drought-tolerant, slightly acidic sandy loam.
